English is widely spoken. German and French is also understood and to some degree spoken by many Swedes. Swedish is the official language. The Lapplandic people (Samerna) have their own language. Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic are all in the Germanic family of languages, but are still very different from each other.
The Swedish alphabet has three additional vowels after z: å, ä, ö. This is something to keep in mind when using the phone book. W and V are pronounced the same.
